Sign-ups are now open for those interested in putting their four-legged friends in obedience training. Dog obedience classes conducted by Regina Edwards (assisted by Hale County 4-H) are set to begin April 25. For six weeks, participants will meet at 7 p.m. at Lloyd Woods Park on the north side of 7th Street. On-site sign-ups will begin at 6:30 on the day of the first class with class set to start at 7 p.m. Those interested can pre-register by calling Edwards at (806)293-2066. The tuition for the six-week class is $75. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and must be up-to-date on their shots. Participants are asked to bring a collar, leash and a bite-size soft treat for their dog. It’s suggested to wear something with a pocket or an apron during these classes to hold these treats.
Plainview Area Retired Teachers and Personnel chapter will host its next meeting on April 4 at the Plainview Adult Activity Center, 1107 Smyth St. The meeting will be at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served for $8. RSVPs help the chapter with the lunch count. If you want to attend the program but don’t want to eat, you can still join the chapter at noon to watch the program. The city wants your opinion regarding a master plan for parks, recreation and open space. The plan will help guide investments for the park system over the next five to 10 years. The application period is open for The United Family summer internship program. The deadline to apply is April 1. The 10-week program is open to full-time college students, recent graduates and others who may qualify, according to a news release from The United Family. Education, music and worship come together on Friday, April 1, as Wayland Baptist University’s Department of Music hosts the third Clay R. Warren Memorial Music Symposium. Featured guest Dr. Randall Bradley, professor of church music at Baylor University, will bring his unique experience and perspective to the Wayland classroom, then lead in a community concert at 7 p.m. in Harral Auditorium. The 53rd annual Ranch Day is set for April 2 at the National Ranching Heritage Center. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center on the Texas Tech campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2022 Teacher Externship Program through Workforce Solutions South Plains. The Teacher Externship Program is a collaboration between employers across the South Plains, the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance and school districts across the region. The five-day experience will include orientation, three days of on-site hands-on learning and final presentation day. There are 200 openings for the experience. Participants will earn a $700 stipend. Students will come from Japan, Korea, Asia, South American and Europe. American Cultural Exchange Services is a non-profit educational organization designated by the U.S. Department of State. The students will experience life in America and will get a feel for what it’s like being a part of an American family and an American High School. South Plains Community Action is offering mortgage assistance to income-eligible households impacted by COVID-19. The program will help qualifying households to pay up to six consecutive months of full and/or partial mortgage payments, including mortgage arrears, according to a flyer from SPCAA. At least one of those months of mortgage coverage can be used to cover a future monthly payment.
