They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and when it comes to the number of charming small towns to visit, this is definitely true. We’ve rounded up 10 towns that’ll make great stops or destinations for all sorts of travelers.
1. Wimberly
Wimberly is a serene, artsy, and best of all welcoming small town in Hays County. It prides itself on its hospitality, which is made evident from the number of shops, quality restaurants, and art galleries that make up this otherwise tiny town. It’s also a great option for nature lovers – you will definitely want to check out the nearby Jacob’s Well Natural Area, a stunning artesian spring and swimming spot.
2. Dripping Springs
Here’s a great option for wine and nature lovers alike. Located in the Texas Hill Country, this small town is in close proximity to some gorgeous state parks and stunning natural features. You’ll want to check out Pedernales Falls State Park as well as Hamilton Pool Preserve. Dripping Springs is also nearby several fantastic wineries – consider checking out Dutchman Family Winery for wine tastings.
3. Johnson City
This small town has a wide variety of reasons you should add it to your travel plans. Johnson City is home to several amazing wineries, earning its spot as the start of the 290 Texas Wine Trail. It’s also home to some one-of-a-kind art galleries, and, if you’re traveling with kids, the town’s interactive exhibits at the Science Mill are sure to entertain!
4. Bandera
Bandera is the perfect place to experience a little bit of old west charm in modern times. It’s located about an hour away from San Antonio, making this a great option for an overnight stay as well as a potential day trip. You can look forward to trail rides, an old-fashioned bar, and more!
5. Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg sets itself apart from any of the other small towns on this list thanks to its German theme. It might sound odd that a small town in Texas would feature European-style architecture, food, and shops, however, the town actually has a rich German heritage. You can learn more about Fredericksburg’s history at the Pioneer Museum. If its unique theme isn’t enough of a reason to visit, its wine tasting opportunities will be – it’s also the ending spot of the 290 Texas Wine Trail.
6. Marfa
If you’re looking for a quirky town to visit, Marfa is the place for you. This artsy town is home to some unique and out-of-the-box art installations such as a fake Prada storefront in the middle of the desert.
7. Marble Falls
Marble Falls is a small town in Burnet County. It offers some classic Texas staples such as excellent wineries and delicious food, but it also provides some unique opportunities for Hill Country adventure. With nearby spots for rock climbing, mountain biking, and cliff diving, this is the perfect option for the more adventurous!
8. Port Isabel
This small town, located on the coast, has a long and rich history as well as plenty for visitors to do. You’ll want to check out the Port Isabel Lighthouse or The Port Isabel Historic Museum to learn more about the area. Then, enjoy some local cuisine at Joe’s Oyster Bar or Pirate’s Landing Restaurant. Finally, don’t forget to explore at least a few of the town’s shops – there are several hidden gems such as Coastal Winds, which offers all manner of home décor and souvenirs.
9. Alpine
Located about an hour from Big Bend National Park, Alpine is a delightful small town nestled in a valley. One of the most well-loved border towns to the national park, Alpine is home to the Museum of Big Bend as well as close to several other interesting natural sites, including Paisano Pass Volcano. It’s also home to the thoroughly delicious and high-quality Reata Steakhouse, making this a great option for foodies as well!
10. Rockport
If you enjoy year-round fun in the sun, you’ll definitely want to check out Rockport, Texas. Sitting on the Gulf of Mexico, Rockport enjoys fairly mild winters (temperatures usually no lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s an excellent spot for boating, swimming, jet-skiing, and all other manner of water activities.
