As 2021 came to a close, the number of homicides reported in Oakland County totaled 35 — an increase of more than 30 percent from the year prior.
An especially tragic component: Of those slain, eight were children. The youngest, a 15-month-old infant, was allegedly killed by his parents. A 3-year-old victim allegedly died at the hands of an assumed trusted caregiver. An 8-year-old girl was allegedly slain by her own brother. And a 15-year-old was fatally shot by her stepfather, authorities said, who then killed himself.
The four other young victims lost their lives when a teenaged accused murderer went on a shooting spree at their high school — thrusting what was once a quiet community into the media spotlight and devastating countless lives in its aftermath.
For most of the county’s homicide cases, charges have been filed against the alleged killer or killers.
Pontiac continues to have the undesirable status of being the community that leads the county with the most reported murders. Oxford Township had the second most homicides in 2021, all from the Nov. 30 mass shooting at Oxford High School. Other Oakland County communities where homicides were reported in 2021 include Troy, Pleasant Ridge, Farmington Hills, Southfield, Madison Heights, Auburn Hills, Royal Oak Township, Commerce Township, Clawson and Oak Park.
In 2020, Oakland County had 26 reported homicides. The year prior, there were 20, and in 2019 there were 29.
The 2021 cases, starting with the most recent:

Crumbley’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are charged with involuntary manslaughter for the deaths. They’re accused of being irresponsible gun owners and allowing their son access to the gun investigators say was used in the shooting. It’s also believed they purchased the gun for him as an early Christmas present.
The three Crumbleys are scheduled to return to 52-3 District Court on Jan. 7. Ethan Crumbley is scheduled for a probable cause conference in the morning. James and Jennifer Crumbley are scheduled to have a hearing in the afternoon to address a change in bond requested by their attorneys.

A few days after the shooting, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said details of what led up to it were “too disturbing to release to the public at this time.” He also said Stribling was seen “brandishing” a weapon prior to the shooting.
According to Barren, the first police officer on the scene arrived within three minutes of a 911 call and carried Bailei from the apartment to a paramedic unit, which transported her to an area hospital.
Prior to being arrested, Stribling had “tried to cover his tracks” by concocting a story that Bailei was shot during a robbery at the apartment, Barren said. Stribling reportedly hid a handgun that was used in the shooting, later located by investigators.
